An encounter with

"The Receivers"

To the Introduction

01. In the foreground is a L band and S band receiver, the one behind is a C band and X band receiver. They were built at the Radiophysics facilities near Epping in Sydney.

02. This device is a feed horn, machined to be used at the focus of the antenna. It is for the C band and X band receiver.

03. The stainless steel dewar has the air evacuated from within it to insulate the cryogenically cooled electronics from the outside world. Helium is used as the refrigerant.

04. Here you can see the electronics which are located inside the cryogenically cooled dewar in each antenna. This equipment operates at -263°C (10 degrees above absolute zero): the cooling cuts down the "noise" generated by the receiver, allowing very weak astronomical signals to be detected.
